Experiencing New Orleans

I’m sorry that I’ve been M.I.A. in posting, but I just got back from a business trip to New Orleans! Pictures will be up soon, once I find my camera cord.

It was my first time in New Orleans, and I would say it was an experience I won’t soon forget. When we weren’t working, we were eating or drinking … or drinking some more! Bourbon Street is something you could never believe until you see it, as are the legendary “Cities of the Dead.” I spent Saturday morning before my flight walking around the French Quarter, and the architecture is just breathtaking. (Oh, and I had the best coffee of my life at Cafe du Monde!)

I absolutely fell in love with the city, and hope to go back at some point, but not necessarily for business purposes.

As I said, pictures will be up soon!

This is a good blog!

This is an awesome entry.

Diets suck

For the first time in my life, I am on a strict diet. I’m a size 10 and could stand to lose 50 pounds. My goal is to have lost that much weight by Christmas Eve ‘09.

I can get on the whole working out thing. I love to work out. I haven’t been making time for it lately, but once I get to the gym, it’s great. I mean, it’s actually not that great WHILE working out, but the second I step off the treadmill or put down the weights, I feel AWESOME.

It’s the DIET, stupid.

I have to do this, not just to look and feel good. Heart disease will most likely by my BFF by my mid-30s, if not even earlier. My family history is not promising. Dementia is rampant. Cancer is practically a synonym for my last name. While I’ve been relatively healthy (ignoring the anxiety disorder that can consume me from time to time), I know it’s not going to be this way forever. I mean, it certainly could, because I can’t predict the future. But considering what science, modern medicine, and my own gut instincts have told me, if I’m not careful, the future isn’t going to be that great.

So here I am, making 2009 my year of discovery, my year of change. So far, so good. I’ve lost seven pounds (since August ‘08, so no need to get too excited.) But still, seven pounds is seven pounds!

For those interested, I’m eating three to four egg whites at 7 AM, a small protein snack around 9:30 AM (usually some chicken), lunch around noon (protein + carb), another snack around 2 PM (almonds and string cheese, YUM), a protein shake at 4 (which tastes like liquid ass … sorry, there’s no other way to say it), and dinner around 6:30 (no later than 7 PM.)

I’ll be posting about my progress from time to time, but the point of this post was just to point out that I would LOVE a big ol’ order of nacho chips, smothered with queso and salsa, with onions, olives, guacamole and cilantro.

It’s time to grow up, though, and make the grown up decision to not indulge. Being a grown up? Totally stinks. Don’t do it, kids.

Courteney Cox on “Scrubs” … a miss

The new season of “Scrubs” debuted on its new network ABC last night.

I’m new to “Scrubs.” It’s been running nearly nine years, and has a fiercely loyal (if sadly small) following. I caught a repeat on Comedy Central, and became hooked.

That being said, I’m just now catching up on all of the episodes of the first few seasons … the episodes that made this show great. Which is why last night’s premiere was so disappointing. Maybe the show has jumped the shark and I just haven’t caught up to that episode yet. But I have a feeling it was more to do with Courteney Cox-Arquette.

As the new chief of staff, Cox-Arquette has big shoes to fill (Ken Jenkins, otherwise known as Dr. Kelso, hasn’t left the show, but is retired from his position.) I love Courteney. I really do. But she is not a strong enough actress to live up to this show.

Let me rephrase that. She is a strong enough actress … but she can’t escape the curse of “Friends.”

As all of the characters on “Scrubs” are neurotic, obviously the role calls for Cox-Arquette to be, well, neurotic. She does this well. The problem is that when Courteney does neurotic, she still comes across as Monica Gellar. All of us “Friends” aficianados know that milking a patient for every last cent of insurance money is something that Crazy Monica would do.

I can’t even remember the name of Cox-Arquette’s character, because I could only keep thinking “Monica, Monica, Monica! Oh, what would Ross say?”

The funny thing is that everyone was worried that Jennifer Aniston wouldn’t be able to break away from being Rachel. Aniston has proven she is no longer Rachel (her current problem being that she’s now just Jennifer Aniston.) David Schwimmer has done an amazing job in a variety of roles, both on- and off-screen, including the acclaimed History Channel series “Band of Brothers.” Matthew Perry did one of the best acting jobs I’ve ever seen in the made-for-TV special “The Ron Clark Story.” And Lisa Kudrow is so fabulous (and will forever be known for “Romy & Michelle”) that she can do whatever she wants.

… and I think Matt LeBlanc just fell off the face of the Earth after the disaster that was “Joey.”

But Cox-Arquette is still under the “Friends” umbrella, and my guess is that until she steps away from the crazy characters, she always will be. And unfortunately, she’s bringing the well-oiled machine that is the cast of “Scrubs” down with her.
